Derry City 2 Bray Wanderers 1
Bray suffered a narrow EA SPORTS MU15 League of Ireland Tier 2 North defeat on the road on Saturday afternoon.
After an impressive opening 5-0 success over Mayo FC last week, the young Seasiders went down 2-1 against Derry at the Shared Village.
Under sunny conditions but with a strong wind blowing, City had the better of the opening period.
But Wanderers were on top in the second half exchanges.
The Candystripes went ahead in the 12th minute.
After a byline cutback, Oisin O’Brien took one touch at the edge of the six-yard box and rifled high into the net at the near post from a tight angle.
That lead was doubled in the 20th minute. Liam Kelly’s 25-yard free-kick - with the aid of the wind - found its way under the crossbar.
But the visitors rallied before the interval. Jamie Lynch put Kyle Jackson free in the area, but Derry keeper Jake Morgan smothered the resulting shot.
Just before the break, away netminder Elliot Homan brought off a superb one handed save from another home free-kick in the ‘D.
The second half was all about Bray. But a litany of chances came and went.
The Green and White’s pulled one back in the 55th minute.
Zac Lawlor swung in a great corner which found Ryan Higgins unmarked on the six-yard area and the defender powered in a header.
Wanderers pressed for an equaliser after that.
Daniel Oluwadara Olusola had a dubious offside call when clean through.
In a frantic last minute where every outfield player was in the Derry box for a Bray corner - three headers in quick succession by the Wicklow just wouldn’t go in.
Bray Wanderers: Elliot Homan; Jamie Lynch, Adeyemi Raphael Odogiyan, Ryan Higgins, Senan Dutton; Lewis Brady, Daniel Howard; Zac Lawlor, Kyle Jackson, Conor Cunningham; Daniel Oluwadara Olusola.
Subs: Rhys Behan, Fionnan O'Snodaigh, Kristofer Marku, Nathan Roberts Byrne, Shane O'Dowd.
* Elsewhere in the section, Drogheda United defeated Sligo Rovers 4-1 at the Drogheda Institute of Further Education. Dundalk overcame Mayo FC 5-0 at the Muirhevnamor Sports Centre while Finn Harps beat Longford Town 5-1 at Bishopsgate.
All the result mean Derry and Finn Harps lead the way on six points after two games; Bray, Dundalk, Sligo and Drogheda all have three points.
* Bray are away to Dundalk on Saturday July 5 next at Oriel Park in the last 16 of the EA Sports Michael Hayes Cup.
