Stalemate at St Colman’s: Ramblers and Bray Trade Blows in Thrilling Draw

By Gareth Danaher at St Colman’s Park

The spoils were shared on Friday night as Cobh Ramblers and Bray Wanderers fought out a 1-1 draw in a captivating encounter at St Colman’s Park. Both sides showcased fluid, high-tempo football on the pristine synthetic surface in a match that remained in the balance until the final whistle.

A Frantic Opening Exchange

The contest ignited early, with both teams finding gaps in the opposition defense within the opening ten minutes:

5th Minute: Cobh’s Rhys Brennan found himself one-on-one with Jimmy Corcoran, but the Bray goalkeeper reacted quickly to stifle the chance.
6th Minute: Bray responded instantly as Tyreik Sammy broke clear, only for Ramblers’ keeper Timo Martin to produce a vital save with an outstretched leg.
13th Minute: The trend of solo runs continued when Wilson Waweru surged through, but his decision to shoot early allowed Corcoran to smother the attempt comfortably.

Bray Draws First Blood

Despite Cobh's pressure, it was the visitors who broke the silence in the 31st minute. Following a period of sustained play, Alain Kizenga delivered a pinpoint cross into the area. Jamie Duggan rose above the defenders to power a header past Martin.
Ramblers fought hard for a quick reply. Just before the interval, Ryan Gourdie controlled a ball on his chest and unleashed a stinging volley, but Corcoran gathered it on the second grab to keep Bray ahead at the break.

Late Drama and the Equalizer

The second half mirrored the first, with both outfits trading opportunities. While Bray looked more dangerous in the early stages of the half—with Dan Ring and Claudio Osorio both coming close—it was the home side that found their second wind as the clock ticked down.

The pressure finally told in the 85th minute. Following a chaotic scramble in the Bray penalty area, the ball struck a defender's arm, prompting referee Kevin O’Sullivan to immediately award a penalty.

The Deciding Moment: Veteran midfielder Jason Abbott stepped up to the spot and coolly dispatched the penalty, leveling the score and ensuring the Ramblers secured a well-earned point.
