Bray host Cork City in a 1-1 thriller stalemate.
Gareth Danaher reports from the Carlisle Grounds.
A riveting encounter saw Bray Wanderers shake off their recent struggles to earn a thrilling 1-1 draw against dominant league leaders Cork City.
Ifunanyachi Achara netted his first goal for the club to give the Seagulls the lead just before the half an hour mark, but a thunderous strike from Conor Drinan early in the second half ensured Cork maintained their unbeaten league run in 2026.
It was remarkable the game ended level, as both teams pushed relentlessly for a winner after the break, creating numerous chances but failing to convert when it mattered most.
Tyreik Sammy made an immediate impact. Just three minutes in, he pounced & pressured Charlie Lyons into a hurried back-pass to Conor Brann, whose clearance ricocheted off a Cork defender. Bray appealed for a penalty, but their claims were waved away.
Cork then sought after a spot-kick moments later. Joshua Fitzpatrick capitalised on hesitation from Dean O’Shea and broke through, but although Jimmy Corcoran appeared to catch the winger as he rushed out, referee Daniel Murphy signalled for a goal kick.
Bray continued to flirt with danger when Cillian Murphy blocked a Corcoran clearance, though the ball fortunately spun clear.
Sammy missed a golden opportunity in the 18th minute. A precise pass from Cian Doyle split the defence, allowing Sammy to race through, but he dragged his effort well wide with the goal at his mercy.
Greg Bolger initiated Cork’s next attack, finding Fitzpatrick on the right. His low cross just evaded Seáni Maguire, sparing Bray from conceding.
Defensive sloppiness nearly cost Bray again on 22 minutes, as Fitzpatrick stole possession and struck the post with an effort.
Brann then pulled off a fine save to keep Cork level. Alain Kizenga broke forward and delivered a low ball that Richard Ferizaj redirected goalwards, but the goalkeeper reacted sharply to push it away before his defence cleared.
However, Brann was beaten in the 27th minute. McCormack intercepted a pass and attempted an audacious long-range effort. Though it struck the crossbar, Achara reacted quickest to tap into left hand side of the empty net.
Achara benefited from McCormack’s vision, while Kizenga nearly added a spectacular goal himself before halftime. Driving forward from midfield, he surged into the box, but a last-ditch challenge weakened his shot, allowing Brann to gather.
Cork appealed for another penalty in stoppage time when Maguire went down under pressure from Doyle, but once again the referee was unmoved.
The visitors began the second half with intensity. Bolger slipped a clever pass to Drinan, but Corcoran reacted quickly to smother the danger.
A misplaced short kick-out from Corcoran then gifted Cork another chance, with Fitzpatrick firing narrowly wide from the edge of the area.
Cork eventually equalised with a stunning effort. After Bray cleared the initial threat, Drinan received a pass from distance and unleashed a fierce strike that flew into the top corner.
Both teams continued to chase victory. Sammy forced his way onto a through ball from Ferizaj but shot wide from a tight angle.
Corcoran was called into action again, diving to tip a Cillian Murphy free-kick around the post.
The final moments were breathless and eye thrilling, with both sides creating nervy moments, but neither could find a decisive goal.
