Match Report - Bray Wanderers 1 Athlone Town 0, Jul 3, 2026

 

 

 

 

Daniel Ring’s first-half goal proved the difference as Bray Wanderers returned to winning ways with a deserved 1-0 victory over Athlone Town at the Carlisle Grounds on Friday evening. 

 

The Seagulls were looking for an immediate response following last week’s defeat away to Cork City and made an encouraging start, controlling possession and creating the better openings. Their pressure was rewarded in the 27th minute when Ring found the breakthrough, applying a composed finish to give the home side a lead their performance merited. It was a well worked ball by Cian Doyle who played a well timed pass to Achara who took it close to the end line and Ring popped up between the two defenders to head home for his sixth goal of the season. 

 

Bray continued to ask questions for the remainder of the first half, moving the ball with confidence and forcing Athlone onto the back foot. The visitors, however, stayed in the contest and ensured the home side’s advantage remained just a single goal at the interval. 

 

Athlone emerged after the restart determined to find an equaliser and enjoyed their best spell of the evening, winning a number of corners and committing more players forward. Bray’s defence responded superbly, remaining organised under pressure and limiting the visitors to very few clear opportunities despite sustained spells in the final third. 

 

Bray fans got to see their new signing coming on for the last ten minutes of regulation time as Endri Mustali who joined from the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the USL in USA. He made one notable pass through the legs of Jonathan Kehir to find Tyreik Sammy but he couldn’t find the net. 

 

As the game entered its closing stages, the Seagulls continued to show their resilience. Every tackle, clearance and interception was greeted by the home support as Paul Heffernan’s side dug deep to protect their slender advantage. When opportunities arose to break, Bray carried a threat of their own but were unable to add the second goal that would have settled the contest. 

 

After four minutes of stoppage time, the final whistle confirmed another important three points for Bray, who recorded a clean sheet and bounced back in the best possible fashion. Ring’s well-taken first-half finish ultimately proved enough as the Seagulls completed another league victory over Athlone this season. 

 

The result keeps Bray firmly in the promotion picture ahead of another important run of fixtures, while Athlone were left frustrated after seeing their second-half pressure come to nothing. 

 

The Wanderers next fixture is at home to UCD in the “East Coast Derby” next Friday, 10th July with a 7:45pm kick off at the Carlisle Grounds.
