Ten-Man Wanderers Suffer First Home Defeat of the Season

Bray Wanderers suffered their first home defeat of the season as they were beaten comprehensively by a rampant Kerry FC at Carlisle Grounds on Friday evening, with four different visiting goalscorers taking full advantage of a first-half Bray dismissal to leave the Seagulls with much to ponder ahead of Monday's trip to Wexford.
The opening exchanges were tightly contested, with half-chances at each end. Dean O'Shea's inviting delivery narrowly evaded a Bray head inside the Kerry box in the 3rd minute, while shortly after Endri Mustali saw an effort blocked as the hosts began brightly. At the other end, Sean O'Connell supplied a dangerous ball for Cian Bargary in the 12th minute, but the winger could only divert it over as it bounced awkwardly in front of him.
The game turned on the quarter-hour mark. Having been cautioned in the 18th minute, Alain Kizenga was shown a second yellow card in the 26th and dismissed, leaving Bray to play out the remainder of the contest with ten men. Kerry looked to make the extra man count almost immediately, with Niall Brookwell heading a Sean O'Connell free-kick wide in the 27th minute. Bray continued to compete gamely despite their disadvantage – Declan Osagie's volley was well saved by Matt Connor in the 31st minute, and Rian Hogan produced an equally sharp stop to deny Daniel Okwute in the 33rd minute. Sean McGrath side-footed over from close range in the 38th minute, and Ifunanyachi Achara, following a mazy run from inside his own half, rattled the Kerry crossbar in the 39th minute at the other end in one of the hosts' better moments of the half.
Kerry's numerical advantage told just before the interval. Okwute cut in from the left wing and slipped the ball to Vince Borden some thirty yards from goal. The midfielder's dipping strike flew beyond Hogan and into the top corner to send the visitors in a goal to the good at the break.
Bray searched for a way back into the contest after the restart but could not find an opening against a well-marshalled Kerry backline. The visitors doubled their lead in the 56th minute when McGrath, continuing a promising Okwute run that had been halted just short of goal, gathered the loose ball and calmly guided it into the top corner. Robert Keane replaced the influential Okwute in the 58th minute, and Kerry almost added a third when McGrath's clever effort was scrambled off the line in the 66th minute.
Achara's near-post effort drifted just wide as Bray pushed for a foothold in the 74th minute, but with the extra man continuing to tell, Kerry pulled clear in the closing stages. Substitute Jonas Häkkinen made it three in the 77th minute, and Cian Murphy added a fourth in the 79th minute to complete a chastening night for the Seagulls. Matt Connor was called into action once more to deny a Bray consolation in the 82nd minute, before a triple change for the visitors – Colin Healy, Cian Brosnan and debutant Simon Lüchinger replacing Murphy, Häkkinen and Borden – saw out a routine finish in Wicklow.
It was a difficult night for Paul Heffernan's side, whose focus now turns quickly to Monday's away trip to face Wexford FC as they look to bounce back from a heavy defeat on home soil. There was a positive note late on, however, as Ajibola Oluwabiyi made his Bray Wanderers debut off the bench, having signed for the club during the week.
