It is with great sadness that the club has learnt of the passing of our former Manager, Coach and Player John Holmes.

John captained the successful Metropolitan Cup winning side in the 1975/76 season, and was an integral part of our staff with the 1990 and 1999 FAI Cup winning teams.

“He was one of the best men ever to come into the club, he was a great manager and a great coach, but above all, John was a wonderful person,” said Head of Football Pat Devlin.

“John was a fantastic player/coach in his own right, and he will be a part of the clubs history forever.”

John Holmes was Head Coach of the First Team when Bray Wanderers won the First Division title in 1985 at the first time of asking.

“That was a wonderful time for both the club and the town. John played a major part in helping the club become champions that season.”

John became First Team Manager in December 1990 until he stepped down in March 1995.

During his time in charge he led the club to promotion in 1990/91 and managed the club in the Premier Division in the 1991/92 and 1992/93 seasons.

Pat Devlin expressed the thoughts of everyone at the club by saying “It’s a very sad time for his wife Margaret, not forgetting their beloved son Stephen who sadly passed away recently; also their son Trevor, all passed family members, and his wide circle of friends. John was a great football man who’ll forever be associated with Bray Wanderers. Our condolences to his family and friends.”
